About

I am a teacher and professor with 20+ years of experience in K-12 public schools in Virginia and international schools in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.  I’ve taught Pre-K, Grade 2, middle school and high school students.

I always wanted to be a teacher. Raised in Northern Virginia, I was fortunate to have attended Fairfax County Public Schools from K-12 in the 1980s and 1990s, where I received an excellent education that served as a strong foundation for higher education (U.Va.), my career, and involvement in my community.

One of my fondest memories is from 9th grade when I decided to take Western Civilization, a class taught by a Ph.D. in European history from U.Va. His lectures taught us to follow complex arguments without relying on gimmicks or technology—something that was hardly present in classrooms back in 1991 anyway.  The course also used a textbook by William McNeill, a Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Chicago. Although the material was challenging and I “bombed” multiple tests along the way, those struggles taught me valuable lessons in strength and resilience. The difficulty of the course pushed me to persevere, and I eventually grew stronger for it. I still keep that textbook, The Ecumene, on my coffee table as a reminder of the joy of learning and the importance of pushing through challenges, or as I like to think, per aspera ad astra.

This is a bygone era, though, and not relegated to just one school district.  Deficits in learning across content areas because of a focus on educational trends and less instructional time, coupled with various agendas and a pervasive belief that children are fragile frustrated me as an educator.  In 2025, I partnered with Kaipod Learning and founded Northern Virginia Classical Academy as a microschool.
